What is the Pattern Puzzle - Solution

 June 24, 2018     No comments

Write down the next line in the following pattern:

Our Solution:

Each row describes the grouping of the digits in the line above.

The top row "1" has one one, so we write "11" for the second row.
The second row "11" has two ones, so we write "21" for the third row.
And so on.

To describe the line: 31131211131221
We say: one three, two ones, one three, one one, one two, three ones, one three, one one, two twos and one one.

Which is: 13211311123113112211

Missing Number 2 Puzzle - Solution

 June 24, 2018     2 comments

Our Solution:

The left number multiplied by 5 gives the total of the other two:
27 × 5 = 56 + 79
23 × 5 = 88 + 27
16 × 5 = 56 + ??

So ?? = 16 × 5 - 56 = 80 - 56 = 24

Circling The Square Puzzle - Solution

 June 23, 2018     No comments

Circling The Square Puzzle - Solution

In the diagram below, each circle is just big enough to touch all four sides of the square. The area of the square is therefore just a bit more than the area of one of the circles.

I want to know how many of the circles you need to cover the whole square. Is 2 enough? Or do you need 3? Or 4? Or more?

I have put 5 circles for you to play with (print and then cut them out), but what is the least number you need?

Our Solution:

The actual answer is that you need FOUR circles to cover the square completely.

Three Vessels Puzzle - Solution

June 23, 2018     PUZZLES     No comments

There are three different color cylindrical vessels: Blue, Red, and Green, with the sizes, as shown.

The Red vessel is put into the Blue one, and the Green vessel into the Red one as shown.

Each vessel is full of water.

Which vessel contains the largest quantity of water?

You can ignore the thickness of the walls of the vessels.

Our Solution:
Radius of green vessel = 4/2 = 2
Radius of red vessel = 6/2 = 3
Radius of blue vessel = 8/2 = 4

Volume of green vessel on its own =
π × 22 × 5 = 20π
Volume of red vessel on its own =
π × 32 × 4 = 36π
Volume of blue vessel on its own =
π × 42 × 3 = 48π

Volume of water in green vessel = 20
π
Volume of water in red vessel = Volume of red vessel - 4/5 × Volume of green vessel = 36
π - 16π = 20π
Volume of water in blue vessel = Volume of blue vessel - 3/4 × Volume of red vessel = 48
π - 27π = 21π

So the Blue Vessel contains the largest quantity of water.
